Castleton Muscatel Second Flush
Castleton Estate, Kurseong, Darjeeling
The legendary Castleton muscatel—wine-like, honeyed, with notes that seem impossible for tea to achieve.
The Story
Castleton Estate, perched at 4,600 feet in Kurseong Valley, consistently produces some of Darjeeling's most sought-after muscatel teas. Their second flush, harvested in May-June, develops the distinctive muscatel character—a grape-like sweetness unique to Darjeeling. In 1992, a lot of Castleton second flush sold for $500 per kilogram, setting a record. The estate's combination of slope, soil, and mist creates conditions that concentrate flavor compounds in ways science still can't fully explain.

Brewing Tips
Second flush can handle slightly hotter water than first flush. The muscatel notes intensify as the tea cools slightly—don't drink it scorching hot. Good Castleton should leave a honeyed coating on your palate that lasts for minutes.
